Opening Bird Pin Feathers Which Pins Are Ready? Comparison #parrot #care

Published on April 04, 2024

How do you know if a pin feather on a parrot's head is ready to be opened? When new feathers grow, they are protected by a sheath in the form of a pin. When the pin is short, firm, and possibly blue in color, the feather is still growing. Opening a pin too early can damage the growing feather and even cause bleeding.

When the pin is long and protruding, soft and flaky, and already starting to open on its own, that is when you know it's ok to help the parrot open the pin feather.

Also, don't open any pin feathers on the body.

Rachel my Blue and Gold Macaw helps me demonstrate about opening pin feathers.
