Purpose of Target Training a Parrot #parrottraining #macaw

Let me show you how target training works with a parrot. This is Rachel, my Blue and Gold Macaw. I teach my Macaw to touch the tip of the target stick with her beak. Then I click the clicker to let her know she did it right, I take the target stick away, and then I give a treat. Using positive reinforcement, I can teach her to follow the stick wherever I point.

I can target my parrot out of the cage, into the cage, onto my hand, and even for teaching fun tricks such as turn around.
