How Long Should Parrot Training Sessions Last?

Published on September 21, 2024

How long should a parrot training session go on for? When you are starting out with parrot training, it can be exciting and fun to train your parrot for a long time. Or, if you have specific training goals such as teaching your parrot to step up or a new trick, you want to keep going until the training is done. However, excessively long training sessions can set your training back because the bird is no longer paying attention.

At first, training sessions should be very short. A new parrot, young or old that doesn't have recent training experience, will have quite a short stamina for training. A very short but successful training session is the way to go. Even if it only lasts a minute or just 30 seconds, as long as the parrot is happy earning treats, you are on the right track. Duration will improve with further practice. The more you train, the longer the training sessions can become.

For a more training experienced parrot, the training session length is determined by the parrot's interest and motivation that day. This can vary where some sessions the parrot is motivated to train for longer and other times it is not. As you have more practice training, you will have a better idea of your parrot's training stamina on a day to day basis.

Overall, expect training sessions for a new parrot to be around a minute long and up to 10 minutes long for a parrot experienced at training. Keep training sessions short and fun and your parrot will look forward to the next one and continue to improve.
