Blue and Gold Macaw Loves it When I Do This!

Rachel my Blue and Gold Macaw loves it when I help her open pin feathers on her head.

This Blue and Gold Macaw was originally my wife's bird before we ever met. Through patience and positive reinforcement training I have been able to build a trusting relationship with this adult macaw. Rachel is 12 years old.

Pin feathers are new feathers growing out. When a parrot molts, old feathers fall out and new feathers grow back in their place. When the new feather is growing, it is shaped like a pin. Parrots open the pin feathers around their body using their beak. But, they can't reach the pin feathers on their own head. They rely on a buddy (such as another parrot or a human companion) to help open those.

So, Rachel really likes it when I give her cuddles and scratch open all the itchy pin feathers on her head.
