Parrot Body Language That Nobody is Talking About!

Published on May 29, 2025

Let me tell you about parrot body language that nobody is talking about! You can learn so much about a parrot's mood in the moment from the grip they make with their feet. By having a bird perching on your hand, you can sense their expression by feel.

In this video you can see Rachel my Blue and Gold Macaw vary between a tight grip and a loose grip on my hand. A tighter grip implies that the bird is more alert, focused, and possibly concerned or mad. A looser grip usually implies relaxation and contentedness.

Some parrots have tighter grips in the long run, particularly older birds and parrots with clipped wings. If a parrot is afraid of falling off because it isn't able to or good at flying, it is much more likely to maintain a firmer grip at all times. Baby parrots on the other hand don't usually grip hard enough and are more likely to just fall off. If a parrot has the nails trimmed too short, it may make it difficult to hold on and cause them to compensate with a tighter grip.
