How to Teach Parrot Turn-Around Trick - Great Green Macaw

This is how I taught Cucumber the Great Green Macaw the Turn Around Trick. The tools I use for teaching a parrot to turn around are a clicker, target stick, treats, and a Training Perch. Follow these easy step by step instructions in this free instructional guide video to teach any parrot or parakeet the turn around trick.

A Training Perch is essential for teaching the turn-around trick to a parrot as a steady/convenient platform to be learning the trick on. This minimizes distraction and maximizes focus.

The first step teaching a parrot the turn around trick is to teach the parrot to target. This is where the parrot touches the tip of the target stick with its beak, click the clicker, and give a treat. The parrot follows the target stick wherever you point. This is perfect for teaching the parrot to spin because the bird will follow the stick around in a circle.

At first, have the parrot follow the target stick 180 degrees to make a half circle. Eventually this can be increased to 270 and 360 degrees. Lead the parrot with the target stick by keeping the target stick a bit ahead of the beak. Once the parrot touches the target stick, you have to click and give a treat. So, don't stop leading with the target stick until a full circle is complete. At that point halt and let the parrot touch the target stick, click, and give a treat.
