Training a Great Green Macaw

Watch in on a typical training session with Cucumber the Great Green Macaw. Watch how we practice both the basics and his more advanced skills. We start with the most fundamental skill any parrot should learn which is how to come out of the cage.

At first Cucumber is too deep in the cage so I encourage him to come forward to the perch by the door. Once he is on the perch, he can step onto my hand. Out on the Training Perch, this Macaw is ready for training. We warm up with some tricks like Wave and Turn-Around. The Buffon's Macaw practices stepping up and targeting. We also run through putting on a harness for practice.

In addition to a bunch of handling, we practice his more advanced tricks. Cucumber goes on the table to sort colored rings, play basketball, and do the play dead trick. Parrot training is not only fun but also a great way to build a deep relationship with any parrot.
