Quaker Parrot Practicing Coming Out of Cage

Published on July 11, 2025

My Quaker Parrot just started coming out of the cage for a few days now so I am being very cautious practicing having him out. I target him onto a handheld perch and gingerly carry him a few steps away to the Training Perch. I keep a handful of treats to keep him occupied while experiencing being out.

I continue feeding a bunch of seeds to the Quaker Parrot on the Training Perch so he can experience it and get used to being on it. But, before I run out of treats or he flies off, I repeat the process directing him onto a handheld perch and back into the cage. Big success! No bites. No fly off. No frights. Just a perfect rehearsal of the behavior I'd like him to exhibit in the long run.

In the process, we are practicing the two most essential skills any parrot should learn: how to come out of the cage and how to go back into the cage when needed.

Now if I weren't so careful, there is a high likelihood he might bite me or start flying all about the room. He doesn't know where to land yet and will likely be quite frantic. This would make him more nervous about being out and more scared of me. So, instead, I carefully structure a brief out of cage time that we can gladly repeat again with less and less effort.
