Is It Normal for a Parrot to Chew Their Perches?

Published on November 18, 2025

Is It Normal for a Parrot to Chew Their Perches? In this video you can see a Pink Cockatoo, also known as a Major Mitchell's Cockatoo, chewing his perches apart. This is perfectly normal. Parrots have a strong need to chew up wooden things. Ideally provide a pet parrot with a lot of wooden toys to chew. But, sometimes, parrots just like chewing the perches more than the toys. It is better and safer for a parrot to be chewing on perches than doors, moldings, furniture, and things around the house. Chewing toys or perches helps prevent them from chewing their own feathers. So, provide an abundance of wooden toys and perches and let your parrot chew what it likes.
