What a Clicker is for When Parrot Training

Published on March 09, 2025

What is that clicking sound you hear when I am training my parrots? I use a clicker for more effective parrot training. A clicker makes a click sound when you press the tab or button and it lets the parrot know they did the right behavior and earned a treat. Not only is a clicker more precise for timing the moment the parrot made the right action but it also tells them who to listen to. Whoever is holding the clicker is the person the parrot will pay attention to and is very useful for teaching a parrot to be more cooperative with other members of the family or other people.

A clicker can be used to precisely capture the exact moment the bird does the right behavior. For example if I want to encourage Rachel to wave her foot higher, I can click the clicker when her foot is highest in the wave. This will help her realize that going up with the foot more is what earns the treats. A clicker can also be very handy for capturing parrots talking and many other behaviors.

Rachel is a 12 year old Blue and Gold Macaw and she is really good at clicker training.
