Why It’s a Mistake Not to Use Parrot Training Tools for Parrot Training!

Published on August 26, 2024

Do you really have to use a clicker and target stick for parrot training? Parrots are smart and are capable of learning tricks and behavior without any training tools. Yet, it would be a mistake to skip out on using parrot training tools for several reasons.

First of all, they learn better when the proper training tools are used. The tools help isolate the concept you are trying to teach and more efficiently help the parrot focus on exactly that. Luring with treats, for example, might work. But, luring distracts the parrot with the treat. If the parrot doesn't want that exact treat, it may not comply. Target training teaches a parrot to follow the target without the presence of treats. It is easier to transition a concept like target training to stepping up entirely without treats than relying on the parrot to go where food is held.

However, training efficiency isn't the only reason it would be a mistake not to use parrot training tools for training! Parrot training tools help training concepts carry over to other people whether other family members, friends, guests, or even random people on the street. The parrot learns to cooperate with whoever holds the training tools and directs the parrot. Beyond just other people, parrot training tools also help the parrot listen to yourself. Sometimes parrots lose trust in a person. It could be from a single accidental traumatic experience or it can be completely out of nowhere. Sometimes changes in age or hormonal periods can trigger a parrot to lose trust in someone they once liked. For this reason, using parrot training tools is a great way to bring back past trust and friendships. Parrot training tools help trust and training concepts carry over to anyone who is using them.

The most essential parrot training tools are:
