Should You Make Your Parrot Step Up??

Published on August 05, 2024

Should you make your parrot step up if it doesn't want to? What should you do when you try to make your parrot step up but the parrot is not stepping up?

Some people are under the misconception that you have to make your parrot step up even if the bird is unwilling. This is a bad idea because it can make them bite and harbor resentment. Instead of sticking your hand in front of the parrot, it is always better to show your hand from the side. Ask your parrot to step up instead of making your parrot step up.

In this video you can see how Rachel my Blue and Gold Macaw does not want to step up at first, particularly because I stick my arm directly in front of her. You can see how the macaw hunkers down by gripping the perch tighter and leaning away from my arm. But, when I show my hand from the side, ask her nicely, and make it her choice, she comes right over and steps up herself.
