Parrot Beak - Are those CRACKS?

Published on September 21, 2023

What is going on with this beak? Is this parrot beak cracked? What are those cracks you see on Macaw beaks?

This video shows an up close look at Rachel, my Blue and Gold Macaw's beak. The beak is actually continually growing. It grows from the root out to the tip but it also peels off in layers. Sometimes layers peel off unevenly so you may see a crack line or some flakiness in that area.

Keep your bird's beak healthy by providing an abundance of toys and perches to regularly chew on and scratch the beak against. A grooming perch doesn't only help keep the nails trim, many parrots will scratch their beak on it as well:
