Quaker Parrot Daily Training Routine - How I Train a Quaker Parrot

Here's my typical daily training routine with my Quaker Parrot. He is progressing so well and really opening up to me now.

I begin by having the Quaker step up on my finger from his cage to come out to his Training Perch. I test his motivation for taking treats. We do some targeting in different directions for practice and warm up. I can have him step-up onto a handheld perch. Even though the Monk Parakeet steps up on my finger, I still practice having him go on a perch in case someone else wants to pick him up.

Next we practice step up. Lots of step up. This is one of the most fundamental and essential things we'd like a pet parrot to do. And step-up is something we need them to do in order for us to be able to enhance their lives with out of cage time, interaction, and play. I also make sure he is eager and proactive at walking over to step up onto my finger by himself.

This eagerness to step up is perfect because if I take a few steps away, he will just as well flight recall to my hand as well. Flight training is great physical exercise and it helps train the bird where to go and where not to. Having a bird that is eager to fly to me is a great way to also prevent the bird from flying to places in the home I would rather he doesn't go.

We also practice some trick training. I taught this Quaker Parrot the turn around trick so he eagerly spins in place when I cue him. Trick training is a great way to further practice training behavior and build a strong connection.

Lastly, we practice having me grab, pick up, and hold the Quaker Parrot. He is so relaxed in my hand. Now that he is getting so comfortable being held, I started to gently introduce him to some head scratches. He took to them readily! This is in large part because we have had such a strong track record of trust and success in previous interactions that he was able to accept this new form of contact without much work at it directly. I scratch his head with my finger and it appears he enjoys having his ears rubbed.
