My Formula for Building Trust With a NEW Parrot

Published on July 04, 2025

Let me show you how I initially build trust with a newly arrived parrot. In this case, I have a nervous Major Mitchell's Cockatoo that I want to get used to me. I don't go sticking my hands in his cage trying to touch him or take him out. He's probably too nervous/shy to take treats from me right away too. Instead, I sit down and let him observe me. In fact, I sit facing away from the parrot and don't look at him. I keep busy doing something else and let him watch me and see that I'm not doing anything scary at all.

Eventually I can gradually work my gaze toward him and watch him too. This gives him peace and a chance to settle in. He will be less nervous taking treats from me soon if he knows I don't do anything to bother him.
