Previous Video     Return to Search Results     Next Video Does the Parrot Actually Want to Step Up? Published on January 26, 2026 How do you know if a parrot wants to step up? If you make the mistake of sticking your hand directly in front of the bird, you may not like the response when the answer happens to be "no" as the parrot may bite. Instead, of testing the bird with a bite being the way to say "no", it is much better to make it so the parrot says "yes" by stepping up. Show your hand to the side and give the parrot a chance to walk over and step on your hand by itself if that is what it wants. And if the parrot does not walk over to step up, then you can be glad you avoided a bite and find another way to entice the parrot. Use positive reinforcement training with a clicker and target stick to direct the parrot to walk over and step up onto your hand.
