A Typical Day with Cucumber the Great Green Macaw

Published on February 13, 2026

Here's how I spend a typical day with Cucumber the Great Green Macaw, a macaw that I am training to be a well-socialized, fun, and friendly pet.

We start our day by coming out of the cage and checking Cucumber's weight on the scale. Next we put on his harness to go for a walk. A harness isn't for keeping a parrot from trying to fly off. It's really more of a safety belt and only a backup plan. I rely on our training and relationship for the macaw not to be wanting to fly away. The harness is only in case he gets spooked and panics, to prevent him from flying out of sight.

After our walk, we arrive at my enclosed yard to go flying. Cucumber thinks we have to go for a long walk wearing the harness to get to the flying location. Since he loves flying, this is a great reward and incentive for him! We remove the harness and do a bunch of long distance flights in the yard.

We head back inside to do some training. This macaw practices things like the turn around trick, step up, give me your foot, nail trim, fetch, target, ring toss, basketball, play dead trick. And we end it all off with cuddles.

Here are some of the essential supplies I use in this video with Cucumber for training:
